Operation

Thisinstrumentmeasurestherefractiveindexofasampleand

displaystheresultsinºCorSpecificgravity.

1.ZeroAdjustment

Covertheprismwithafewdropsofdistilledwater.Closethe

coverplateandviewthelight/darkboundary(shadowline).If

necessary,turnthetheadjustmentscrewuntilshadowlinealigns

withthescale’szeroline.Thezerocalibrationshouldbe

performedatambienttemperatureandshouldberepeatedevery

30minutesifthethetemperaturechanges.Afterzeroadjustment,

cleantheprismwithasoftcloth.

2.SamplePreparationandReading

Coverthetheprismwithafewwaterdropsofdistilledfrom

includedvial.thethattheClosecoverplatesoliquidspreads

acrosstheentiresurfaceoftheprismwithoutairbubblesordry

spots.Allowthesampleto

remainontheprismfor

approximately30seconds.

Whileholdingtheinstrument

underalightsource,look

throughtheeyepiece.Thebrix

concentrationisdeterminedby

thetheintersectionof

boundaryofthelightanddark

fieldsonthethescale.Ifscale

appearsoutoffocus,adjustbyrotatingthetheeyepieceuntil

scaleisinfocus.Theinstrumentalsofeaturesaneye‐guardto

preventstrayeyepiecelightfromenteringtheandcausing

reflections.

Itmaybenecessaryadjusttothethepositionoflighttosource

maximizethethecontrastofshadowline.Undernormal

conditions,optimalcontrastisobtainedbyholdingtheinstrument

underneathperpendicularandtoalightsource.

Oncebeen(doareadinghastaken,wipedrywithacleanclothnot

washorrinse)andplacesuppliedthetheinstrumentinplastic

case.Storetheinstrumentinasafe,dryenvironment.



3.AutomaticTemperatureCompensation(ATC)

Temperaturecompensationrelievesthetheuserofresponsibility

tomeasuretemperatureandapplyacorrectionfactorwhen

takingreadings.Thisrefractometermakesthiscorrection

automatically.Whenambienttemperaturevariesfrom20°C,

readingsareautomaticallytoadjustedcompensatefor

temperaturevariancebetween10°Cto30°C.
