Operation

Thisinstrumentmeasurestherefractiveindexof a sampleand

displaystheresultsinºCorSpecificgravity.

1.ZeroAdjustment

  Cover the prism with afew drops of distilled water. Close the

coverplateandviewthelight/darkboundary(shadowline).If

necessary,turn thetheadjustmentscrewuntil shadowlinealigns

withthescale’szeroline.Thezerocalibrationshouldbe

performedatambienttemperatureandshouldberepeatedevery

30minutesifthe thetemperaturechanges.After zeroadjustment,

cleantheprismwith a softcloth.

2.SamplePreparationandReading

Coverthe theprismwith a fewwaterdropsofdistilled from 

includedvial.thethat theClose coverplateso liquidspreads

acrosstheentiresurfaceoftheprism without air bubbles or dry

spots.Allowthesampleto

remainontheprismfor

approximately30seconds.

Whileholdingtheinstrument

under a lightsource,look

throughtheeyepiece.Thebrix

concentrationisdeterminedby

the theintersectionof 

boundaryofthelightanddark

fieldsonthe thescale.If scale

appearsoutoffocus,adjust by rotatingthe theeyepieceuntil 

scaleis in focus.Theinstrumentalsofeaturesaneye‐guard to

preventstray eyepiecelightfromenteringthe andcausing

reflections.

Itmaybe necessaryadjust to the thepositionof light tosource 

maximizethe thecontrastof shadowline.Undernormal

conditions,optimalcontrastisobtained by holdingtheinstrument

underneath perpendicularand to a lightsource.

Once been(do a readinghas taken,wipedrywith a cleancloth not

washorrinse)andplace suppliedthe theinstrumentin plastic

case.Storetheinstrumentin a safe,dryenvironment.



3.AutomaticTemperatureCompensation(ATC)

Temperaturecompensationrelievesthe theuserof responsibility

tomeasuretemperatureandapply a correctionfactorwhen

takingreadings.This refractometermakes this correction

automatically. When ambient temperature varies from20°C,

readings are automatically toadjusted compensatefor

temperaturevariancebetween10°Cto30°C.
