Welcome
Hello and thank you for purchasing the Cloud 44 passive ribbon microphone. Below you'll
find information on how to care for your microphone. Ribbon mics can be fragile, but proper
care will ensure extraordinary sound and functionality for years to come.
Output and Preamps
The Cloud 44 is a passive ribbon microphone. Like all passive ribbon microphones, your new
44 needs 65-75dB of clean gain, in order to have adequate signal strength when capturing
low and moderate sound level sources such as vocals, acoustic instruments and percussion.
A standalone “Cloudlifter” Microphone Activator is included with your 44 passive ribbon
microphone. This can be used inline with your 44 and any microphone preamp that has
+48v phantom power available to power the microphone. The Cloudlifter will add up to
+25dB of additional signal strength, in order that the preamp can operate in a more
comfortable gain range. This reduces noise and other artifacts that increase when the gain
level on the preamp is pushed closer to its upper limit. The Cloudlifter brings more clarity
and focus by providing more of the actual microphone signal, allowing the gain level of the
preamp to be significantly reduced.
Cloud 44 with and without the Cloudlifter
Never apply phantom power to the Cloud 44 without the Cloudlifter inline. Phantom power
can cause serious damage to any passive ribbon microphone. The Cloudlifter protects any
passive microphone from exposure to phantom power, while also providing the additional
gain. If you would like to use your Cloud 44 without the Cloudlifter you will need a preamp
with enough gain, typically 65-75dB of gain. Using the Cloud 44 without the Cloudlifter may
result in hearing more of the preamp’s character and color, which may be desirable in some
cases. On the other hand, when the Cloudlifter is used, the balance changes and you may
hear more of the Cloud 44’s natural character and less impact on the sound from the
electronics in the preamplifier. This is because preamps typically sound more natural in the
lower gain ranges, but are exponentially more colored, for better or worse, at the top of the
gain range. It’s all subjective and experimentation is encouraged. By having the Cloudlifter
external to the microphone, you have more choices available. Additionally can use your
Cloudlifter with other ribbon, dynamic, or tube microphones in your collection.
Swivel Mount Use and Maintenance
The hex key that is included is for occasional tightening only. When adjusting the angle of
the microphone for placement, it is not necessary to loosen the hex screw on the mount.
The hex screw should remain very tight at all times for normal angle adjustments.
Adjust the angle of the swivel mount for placement by gripping the body or frame of the
microphone and moving it into position by hand. If the mount does become loose, which
should be very rare, it can be tightened easily. To tighten the mount, simply place the mic
on a stand and hold the body with one hand for stability. Tilt the microphone forward on the
mount and tighten the hex screw where the mount meets the body of the microphone so
that it is nice and snug. Move the mic forward and back on the mount a few times, then
torque a bit further to ensure that it is very tight. If tightened properly, the mount should
remain tight for a very long time, years in fact, and not become loose during normal angle
adjustments.

USER GUIDE
PASSIVE RIBBON MICROPHONE
Due to its smooth frequency characteristics and natural,
detailed sound, the Cloud 44 is a versatile microphone that
excels in a wide variety of applications. Instrumental and
voice applications are captured with a detailed and natural
character. The Cloud 44 is an especially desirable alternative
for vocals and instruments that may sound too harsh or thin
using other types of microphones, such as a condensers,
where elevated response in the upper frequency bands,
distortion, or other resonate peaks may exist.
From a technical point of view, ribbon
microphones may sound smooth by comparison to other
microphone types, as distortion characteristics do not exist
inherently in the technology.
When miking loud or potentially windy sound sources
(guitar/bass amps, kick drums, plosive heavy dialogue),
we recommend using a pop filter and correct placement.
Tilt the mic slightly and place it off axis, from the side,
to avoid potential damage from the ribbon taking the force
of intense low frequency pressure waves head on.
Voice - The Cloud 44 has a great deal of depth and detail across its frequency range.
It may be desirable to use a high pass filter (HPF) when recording certain voices or
instruments, to reduce exaggerated bass frequencies naturally occurring due to the
proximity effect common with ribbon microphones. This allows for greater presence and
clarity in the mid range and high frequency detail. When more high frequency material
is desired, reducing low and subsonic material is often the best place to start in terms of
EQ. The microphone opens up in a very natural way when a HPF is engaged between
80-120hz.
Drum Overheads - A Blumlein pair, spaced pair, or single mic placed a few feet above
the kit will result in a full-bodied and natural sound, while nicely smoothing out
potentially harsh transients. Mid/Side configuration can deliver amazing results with
ease, as the 44 passive’s deep side nulls and “mirror” imaging is spectacular when
blended with the center mic in a stereo Mid/Side configuration. Additionally, the
Cloud 44 sounds full and detailed as a room mic when placed several feet in front of a
drum kit.
Amplifiers - A somewhat cautionary approach will enable guitar amps to sound fantastic
when recorded with the Cloud 44-A. With proper care regarding placement, the 44-A will
provide many years of service in this capacity. For smaller amps or those with moderate
volume levels, place the microphone no closer than 18 inches from the speaker cone,
slightly off axis from the side. For very loud or higher SPL amplifiers, it is definitely
recommended that you place the mic at a greater distance from the source.
Do not place the microphone anywhere you can feel wind or sound pressure with your
hand.
Acoustic Instruments/Piano - A little distance here (1-3 feet) will make for a warm,
complete picture that is very full. For piano - One mic or pair of mics there are many
workable placements, such as off the strings or the soundboard. It depends on the
instrument and taste as the placement will be a key factor. For instance, a brighter sound
with more attack may result from miking the strings, while a rich, full bodied sound may
be captured from the back of an upright along the soundboard.
